Eighteen Chefs, a restaurant chain in Singapore, withdrew a memo that required its employees to provide a photo of them at a clinic when applying for sick leave.
Alison, a long-time worker at the chain, told Shin Min Daily News she received the memo, effective immediately, via WhatsApp last month.
It said staff on sick leave must submit a valid medical certificate along with a “photo of themselves taken at the clinic during consultation.”

Medical certificates issued through teleconsultation are not eligible, it added. “The company issued this [memo] without any advance notice or explanation.
“We are surprised and we feel it is very unfair. We dare not request for sick leave,” Alison said.
According to AsiaOneEighteen Chefs said the memo was withdrawn shortly after senior management was alerted and that no employee was disciplined or penalized.
Under Singapore’s Employment Act, employers must recognize medical certificates issued by registered practitioners, including those obtained via teleconsultation.
Alison said she was informed five days later that the notice had been withdrawn but added that her colleagues remained concerned.
