There was an emotional moment on air as a BBC presenter struggled to hold back tears while announcing she is leaving her role. Sophie Law broke down live on BBC Radio Oxford as she revealed she will be stepping down from her Breakfast show after three years at the helm. The broadcaster, who has worked at the station for a decade overall, became visibly emotional as she shared the news with listeners. She said: "I have to tell you today...", before pausing and adding: "Oh, I'm gonna go. I knew I was going to go".
Gathering herself, Sophie continued: "That at the end of this week, I'm going to leave this show." She then explained the reason behind her decision - a new role on television. Sophie said: "And it's for the best reasons, because I'm joining the presenting team at BBC South Today on the 18.30 weekday evening telly news. So I'm going to be on BBC One across the south and I'm really thrilled about that, but I am so, so sad about leaving this show."
The presenter described the move as a career-defining opportunity, admitting she could not turn it down.
She said: "It is the opportunity of a lifetime and I know that if I turned it down, I would've spent the rest of my life and career wondering, what if?"
"So, I'm excited and I'm thrilled. But as you can tell, it's also been an extremely difficult and emotional decision to leave this job."
Sophie also took a moment to thank her listeners, many of whom have tuned in to her early morning programme for years.
She said: "I know that you all keep listening, I hope that you all still invite me into your home albeit at the other end of the day."
"And know, from my reaction there, how difficult it has been to make this decision. But I'm so, so excited about what happens next. I'm just gonna miss you and this so, so much."
She then attempted to lighten the mood, adding: "I almost got through that without crying, didn't I Mandy?"
The emotional farewell quickly prompted an outpouring of support from listeners on social media. One fan wrote: "Many Congratulations Sophie. Will miss you lots."
Another said: "Congrats, Sophie! We'll definitely miss our daily journey from home to work with you." While another wrote: "Huge congratulations, but so gutted not to be waking up to you and the gang x."
Sophie will now join the presenting team on BBC South Today, appearing on BBC One across the south.
