Noida: In a shocking incident, a private university student drowned in a water-filled pit in Noida on Wednesday. The student had gone for a picnic along with his friends after their exam ended. The incident took place near Sector 94 in the district. The other three students, who accompanied him, are undergoing treatment at a hospital.
As per the police, the four students had entered a vacant spot, where a deep pit was filled with rainwater. There was no warning sign or barricade at the place. The student identified as Harshit Bhatt, a resident of Indirapuram in Ghaziabad, went into the water-filled pit to take a bath. It was while taking a bath that he suddenly drowned.
Rescue teams reached the spot after receiving information
Soon, one of the student’s companions dialled Dial-112. After receiving the information, the Police Response Vehicle (PRV) and the Sector-126 Police Station reached the spot. After reaching, they arranged for local divers to help Harshit get out of the pit. He was pulled out of the water after efforts and immediately shifted to a hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him dead after some time.
The students’ companions who entered the water to save him were also safely rescued, and their condition is currently stable. The police are investigating all aspects of the incident, and further legal proceedings are ongoing, the police added.
A reminder of the Yuvraj Mehta incident
The incident comes months after a 27-year-old software engineer, Yuvraj Mehta, drowned in January this year, while returning home from the office. Due to dense fog, his car plunged into a 70-foot-deep water-filled construction pit near Sector 150. He remained trapped in water for 90 minutes and even called others for help while standing on his car’s roof, before drowning. The incident had led to anger over delayed rescue efforts and negligence.
