The has published an extensive seven-day district-wise forecast of the weather of Uttarakhand with predictions of widespread rainfall and thunderstorms in addition to heavy snowfall in the first few days, later progressing into drier weather.
As per the forecast made public by the IMD on April 8, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is predicted for most districts of Uttarakhand on April 8. Snowfall is predicted at places higher than 2800 meters above sea level. This weather phenomenon will affect all the districts in the region.
There will be a decrease in both the intensity and extent of rainfall by April 9. There might be occurrences of moderate to light rain coupled with thunderstorms and snowfall above the 3000 metres mark at isolated places in the districts of Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh. In other mountainous districts, there might be occurrences of very light to light rainfall at isolated locations. On the other hand, there will be dry conditions in the plains.
From April 10 till April 13, weather activity is likely to further decrease in intensity. There will only be very light to light rainfall with thunderstorms and snowfall above the 3700 metre mark at isolated locations in the districts of Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh. Everywhere else will see dry weather conditions.
Dry weather conditions are expected in all districts of Uttarakhand up to April 14, bringing to an end the active weather period.
Warnings of thunderstorms and hail showersThe IMD has also given out district-wise warnings for the early part of the forecast period. Thunderstorms with lightning, hail showers and strong winds blowing at speeds between 40 to 50 kmph can be witnessed at isolated locations in the districts of Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar on April 8. Similar activities of thunderstorms along with lightning and strong winds can also be witnessed in the other districts.
The temperature trend in Uttarakhand indicates the effect of weather systems. For the past 24 hours, temperatures have been significantly low in the hilly areas and low to significantly low in the plain areas.
As per the predictions made by the IMD, the temperature levels are expected to fall by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius for several places during the next 24 hours. It is further forecasted that in the next few days, specifically in 3-4 days, there will be an increase of 5 to 7 degrees Celsius owing to the stabilising weather conditions.
There is a possibility of certain adverse effects due to various weather phenomena including thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and gusty winds. These adverse effects are expected during April 8-9. In particular, there may be a danger to life and property because of lightning. The gusty winds may result in minor damage to temporary constructions and vegetation.
In conclusion, the weather prediction clearly shows that the weather system will experience transition from unstable weather to stable weather conditions in the upcoming week. Specifically, during the initial two days, there will be rain and storms, however, gradually there will be mostly dry weather in Uttarakhand.
