New Delhi: Piped natural gas (PNG) has become more expensive for households in Delhi-NCR and several other cities after Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) announced a fresh price hike. The revision comes amid rising global energy costs and supply concerns linked to geopolitical tensions.

₹1.70 Per SCM Increase in the Capital

In Delhi, PNG prices have been increased by ₹1.70 per standard cubic meter (SCM), taking the new rate to ₹49.59 per SCM. The previous price stood at ₹47.89 per SCM. The hike will directly impact household budgets, especially for consumers relying on PNG for daily cooking needs.

Similarly, in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad, prices have been raised from ₹47.76 to ₹49.46 per SCM, reflecting a uniform upward trend across the National Capital Region.

Revised Rates in Other Cities

The price increase extends beyond NCR to several other regions. In Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Shamli, PNG now costs ₹48.35 per SCM, up from ₹47.35.

In Rajasthan cities such as Ajmer, Pali and Rajsamand, the revised rate stands at ₹48.27 per SCM. Meanwhile, consumers in Kanpur, Fatehpur, Hamirpur and Chitrakoot will now pay ₹48.95 per SCM, compared to the earlier ₹47.95.

Global Factors Driving the Increase

Gas distribution companies attribute the hike to rising global crude oil and natural gas prices. Ongoing tensions in West Asia have disrupted supply chains, pushing up import and transportation costs. These increased costs are now being passed on to end users.

PNG Adoption Still a Priority

Despite the price rise, the government continues to promote PNG as a convenient alternative to LPG cylinders. With direct pipeline delivery, PNG eliminates the need for booking and storing cylinders, making it a preferred option for urban households.

However, the latest hike adds to the financial strain on consumers, who have already seen LPG cylinder prices rise in recent months. The trend suggests that energy costs may remain elevated in the near term.
