In a recent update, Mahela Jayawardene, the head coach of Mumbai Indians, clarified the situation regarding Mitchell Santner's absence during the IPL 2026 match against Rajasthan Royals held in Guwahati on April 7. Santner was unable to participate due to a minor injury and was not included in the playing XI.
During the post-match presentation, Jayawardene stated that Santner was not at full fitness and was omitted from the lineup as a precautionary measure. He explained, "Mitch had a slight niggle in the previous game and wasn't completely ready for this match. We hope he will be fit for our next game."
Anticipated Return Against RCB
With Santner out of action, Allah Ghazanfar stepped in to fill the gap in the lineup. However, it is expected that the New Zealand all-rounder will recover in time for Mumbai's upcoming match against the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, on April 12. This season, Santner has only played one match against Delhi Capitals, where he managed to take a wicket and scored 18 runs not out. He missed the opening match against Kolkata Knight Riders as he had not yet joined the team.
The Mumbai Indians have faced challenges in maintaining their momentum after a promising start, having lost two consecutive matches, including a six-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals and a 27-run loss to Rajasthan Royals. Currently, they sit with just two points from three matches, putting them under pressure to recover.
Looking Ahead: Key Matches for Mumbai Indians
Historically, the franchise is known for slow starts but often finds its rhythm as the tournament progresses. The return of Mitchell Santner is anticipated to bolster the team's balance as they prepare for two crucial home games against RCB on April 12 and Punjab Kings on April 16. Both teams were finalists in the previous season, making these upcoming matches vital for Mumbai's campaign.
