Mamta Banerjee’s nomination and foot march

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday submitted her nomination as Trinamool Congress candidate from Bhawanipur seat. Before the nomination, he organized a foot march, which was attended by a large number of TMC leaders and workers. After the nomination, Mamata said, “I appeal to everyone to ensure TMC’s victory not only in Bhawanipur but on all 294 seats in Bengal.” He also expressed that “I am deeply saddened that many names have been removed from the voter list of Bengal during SIR.”

When Mamata Banerjee left her Kalighat residence to file nomination papers, she was accompanied by a large crowd of supporters. In his traditional style, he greeted the party workers and supporters standing on both sides of the road with folded hands. During this, he walked about 800 meters to reach Alipore Survey Building and submitted his nomination papers.

Mamata Banerjee, who has been a three-time MLA from Bhawanipur, will face BJP candidate Shubhendu Adhikari. Shubhendu had filed his nomination last week in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other senior leaders, in a display of political strength. This battle of Bhawanipur has become a status symbol and this constituency has become the center of 2026 assembly elections.

Diversity of Bhawanipur

The constituency is home to Bengali middle-class families as well as a large number of people from Marwari, Gujarati, Punjabi, Sikh and Jain communities. In addition, there is also a significant Muslim population. According to the data, about 42 percent of the voters in Bhawanipur are Bengali Hindus, 34 percent are non-Bengali Hindus and about 24 percent are Muslims. About three-quarters of the voters here are Hindu, and political parties often refer to Bhawanipur as ‘Mini India’.
