According to Ayurvedic experts, buttermilk improves digestion, provides a cooling effect to the body, and helps maintain intestinal health. Its consumption is particularly beneficial during the summer months. However, it is also important to understand that buttermilk is not equally beneficial for everyone; in certain specific health conditions, its consumption can actually be detrimental.

Individuals suffering from lactose intolerance should consume buttermilk with caution. For such people, dairy products do not digest properly. Consuming these items can lead to issues such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, or general discomfort. Therefore, if one experiences such symptoms after drinking buttermilk, its consumption should be stopped immediately, or medical advice should be sought.

People prone to colds, coughs, or allergies should also consume buttermilk in limited quantities. Buttermilk has a cooling nature (*sheetal prabhav*), which can increase *Kapha*—or phlegm—levels in the body. This can exacerbate symptoms such as a sore throat, coughing, or respiratory difficulties. In particular, individuals suffering from asthma or other respiratory ailments should exercise great discretion when consuming it.

Those with kidney-related issues should also be cautious regarding their buttermilk intake. Certain minerals present in it can place additional strain on the kidneys. This risk is particularly heightened if it is consumed in excessive quantities. Such individuals need to refrain from drinking buttermilk regularly or in large amounts without consulting a doctor.

For individuals suffering from stomach ulcers or acidity, the effects of buttermilk can vary. In some instances, it provides relief; however, for others, it may aggravate burning sensations or discomfort. Therefore, it is crucial to observe how your body reacts to it and adjust your consumption accordingly.

Finally, consuming buttermilk at the right time and in the proper manner is also of utmost importance. Drinking buttermilk at night is generally not considered advisable, as it can affect digestion and aggravate *Kapha*. Consuming it during the day—particularly in the afternoon—is far more beneficial. Its benefits are further enhanced if a small amount of roasted cumin, curry leaves, or ginger is added to it.

It can be said that buttermilk is a health-promoting beverage, yet it is not suitable for everyone. One should consume it in accordance with one's individual physical constitution and needs. If consumed in the proper manner and quantity, it can offer benefits akin to *Amrit* (nectar); however, if consumed carelessly, it can also lead to health complications.
