'Why Are We Not Celebrating Mohammed Shami?' Ex-IND Star Slams BCCI After Pacer's IPL Heroics

When LSG took on SRH on April 5 in IPL 2026, it was Mohammed Shami who came to the party. The 35-year-old pacer took the wickets of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma to finish with 2/9 in four overs. He played a big part in restricting SRH to 156/9 and LSG won by five wickets to register their first points this season.

Aakash Chopra Bats for Mohammed Shami

Now, former India opener Aakash Chopra feels that this performance by Shami should open the eyes of the BCCI. He said Shami should be celebrated and the argument about the quality of opposition being weak no longer flies. Shami has not played for India since the Champions Trophy last year but has done brilliantly in domestic cricket. Despite that, he has repeatedly been snubbed. Chopra said that surely now BCCI needs to take notice.

"Are we giving Mohammed Shami enough credit, and when will we actually give him credit? It's a big question. Why are we not celebrating him? I am the same person who was saying that the selectors have to choose, and if they are not selecting, they might have seen him, his fitness, and whatever," he said on his YouTube channel.

"I had also said that everyone has to stand up and take notice if he does it in the IPL. Then you cannot say that the opposing team's standard wasn't that good. This is the most competitive league in the world. In such a scenario, he bowled four overs for just nine runs and two wickets, including 18 dot balls, in an afternoon game against the SunRisers Hyderabad," he added.

"He dismissed Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. You have got to celebrate because these are once-in-an-IPL analysis. Where will you get such analysis again? I know Jacob Duffy bowled very well in the first match, but this was an afternoon game. There is no help at all for fast bowlers in an afternoon game, and there was no help for him as well," he went on to say.

LSG Take on KKR

LSG are in sixth place with one win in two games. They face KKR next on April 9. Shami shall look to continue his good form and hope the selectors reward him after the IPL. He turns 36 this year so time is not on his side. So it’s a race against the clock for the fast bowler.
