New Delhi. Nepal’s new Prime Minister Balendra Shah has amended the hierarchy of the Council of Ministers of his cabinet formed on March 27. This amendment has been made in the ministerial posts in less than fifteen days of government formation. According to a release issued from the President’s Office, this step was taken after it was recommended in the Council of Ministers meeting on Tuesday. The change applies to the Council of Ministers formed on the recommendation of Prime Minister Balendra Shah on March 27, in line with Article 76(9) of the Constitution of Nepal. Although the hierarchy of ministerial posts has been changed, their portfolios remain unchanged. Only their order of preference has been rearranged.

In this latest round of amendments, Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has slipped from his previous third position in the cabinet to fifth position. As per the revised hierarchy, Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle is now second only to Prime Minister Shah in terms of seniority. Similarly, Home Minister Sudhan Gurung now comes after Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha. Home Minister Gurung was third in the previous hierarchy. Labor, Employment and Social Security Minister Deepak Kumar Sah is currently ranked 15th in the 15-member cabinet. Balendra Shah Balen was sworn in as the 47th Prime Minister of Nepal in early March. Earlier in the day, Nepalese President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath of office and secrecy to Shah after appointing him under Article 76(1) of the Constitution. The ceremony was attended by Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut, National Assembly Speaker Narayan Prasad Dahal, former prime ministers, senior officials, security chiefs and members of the diplomatic community.
