Controversy over ‘Nikah’ ceremony in Shimla’s Ram Mandir Hall; Opposition from Hindu organizations

Tension has arisen over the proposed ‘Nikah’ ceremony in a hall of the Ram Temple complex in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. Many Hindu organizations have expressed strong opposition to this. On this issue, the organizations have called it unfair and warned that if the program is organized as per the plan, they will agitate. This matter has also been formally raised with the temple management. Hindu organizations have registered their protest before the management committee ‘Sud Sabha’. The situation has become more tense after public statements by people associated with the temple administration.

Mohammad Nasir, a resident of Idgah Colony, Shimla, wanted to get his daughter married in the Ram Mandir Hall. Hindu Sangharsh Samiti has strongly opposed this proposal and has openly expressed its displeasure. The committee says that it is not acceptable to allow marriage of any Muslim family in the temple premises. If the program is not cancelled, a large scale movement will be started. Committee leader Madan Thakur said they would hold a symbolic protest, which may include ‘mundan’ (shaving heads) and demonstrations.

Madan Thakur further said, “This is a pre-planned attempt to instigate the sentiments of Hindus. Some people have joined it for a little money. If it is a matter of brotherhood, then we should also be allowed to perform Hanuman Chalisa and Jagran in mosques.” He warned that if what he considered ‘anti-Hindu’ activities were not stopped, a protest march would be taken out at the same location on 11 April and the participants would shave their heads.

At the same time, ‘Sud Sabha’ has adopted a different stand in this dispute. Committee head Rajeev Sood said that the organization respects the sentiments of all religions and such programs have been organized here before also. He said, “Meat, fish and liquor are completely banned under any circumstances in the temple premises. The sentiments of Hindus should be respected. The Sangharsh Committee has given a memorandum, after which a meeting has been called today and further decisions will be taken in it. Both the bride and groom are Muslims and the marriage is not taking place inside the temple, but in a hall located in its large complex.”

He also said that the Constitution of India and the rules of the Sud Sabha do not permit discrimination on the basis of religion. A final decision on this matter will be taken soon after mutual discussion.
