Top House Democrats called Tuesday for Congress to immediately return to session and vote to end the escalating conflict with Iran, sharply criticizing President Donald Trump’s rhetoric and military threats.

In a joint statement, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, and four other senior Democrats described Trump’s comments as alarming and dangerous.

The lawmakers condemned Trump’s statement that a “whole civilization” could be destroyed if Iran fails to reach a deal, calling the remarks shocking and requiring urgent congressional action.

The group urged House leadership to reconvene lawmakers immediately to consider legislation aimed at ending the conflict.

The call reflects growing concern among Democrats that the conflict could rapidly escalate without congressional oversight.

Under the U.S. Constitution, Congress holds the authority to declare war, though presidents often conduct military operations without formal declarations.

Democrats argued that Congress must assert its authority before additional strikes are authorized.

Pressure on House Republicans

The Democratic leaders also urged Republicans to support the effort, framing the situation as a matter of national interest rather than partisan politics.

They called on GOP lawmakers to “put patriotic duty over party loyalty” and join Democrats in opposing further escalation.

With Republicans holding a slim majority in the House, bipartisan support would likely be required to pass any resolution limiting military action.

Rising Political Tensions

The statement came as tensions between the U.S. and Iran intensified ahead of a key deadline set by Trump for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face additional strikes.

Trump’s threats to target infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, have drawn criticism from Democrats and international leaders, who warn such actions could harm civilians and violate international law.

Meanwhile, some Republicans have supported Trump’s approach, arguing that strong military pressure is necessary to force negotiations.

Congress Faces High-Stakes Decision

If Congress returns to session, lawmakers could consider measures including:

  • War Powers resolutions limiting military action
  • Funding restrictions on military operations
  • Formal votes authorizing or restricting strikes

Such actions could shape the direction of U.S. involvement in the conflict.

Growing Calls for Oversight

Democrats emphasized the importance of congressional oversight as the conflict continues to escalate.

The lawmakers warned that failure to act could lead to broader regional conflict and increased risks for U.S. forces.

With tensions rising and military options under consideration, the call for Congress to return signals growing political pressure on the administration.

Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called for President Donald Trump to be removed from office via the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Greene’s post featured a screenshot of Trump’s Tuesday Truth Social post in which he ominously warned that Iran’s “civilization will die tonight.”

A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” Trump declared in the Truth Social post.

Greene, a once-fierce Trump ally, had a bitter falling out with the president last year and has become a vociferous critic of the commander in chief.

Some sitting Democratic lawmakers have also called for the president to be booted from office.

Rep. Ilhan OmarD-Minn., a member of the progressive lawmakers is one of those calling for Trump’s ouster.

Greene declared in a Sunday post on X that the president had “gone insane.”
