IPL: BCCI earns approximately US $ 1 billion from one season of IPL. Even 2 to 3 big cricket leagues combined do not earn that much. However, even after that, Lalit Modi, who started the IPL, believes that BCCI is making a loss of at least Rs 2400 crore every season. About which he has now openly scolded the board. Lalit Modi is seen continuously commenting during IPL 2026.
Lalit Modi is not happy with this decision of BCCI
Despite the addition of two new teams in IPL, the number of matches has not increased. Regarding this, in an interview given to Sportstar, Lalit Modi said, ‘BCCI gets 50 percent of the earnings from every match and the remaining 50 percent is distributed among the teams. In such a situation, teams are now losing earnings of 20 matches every season. It is a contractual responsibility that in return for the fees the teams are paying, they should get a chance to play home and away matches.
Speaking about the home and away format, Modi said, ‘The real value of IPL lies in the home and away format itself. If there was no space for matches in your calendar, you should not have increased the number of teams. The simple thing is that we did not sell IPL in this way. Have all the teams agreed to this change? I can guarantee that he would not have done this.
The board is facing a loss of Rs 2400 crore
After the number of teams was 10, the number of matches in IPL should have reached 94. About which Lalit Modi said, ‘If today there were 94 matches on home-and-away basis and the price of each match was Rs 118 crore, then an additional income of Rs 2,400 crore would have been earned from media rights alone. That means there would have been an additional revenue of Rs 2,400 crore for BCCI. Out of this, 10 teams would have received Rs 1,200 crore, each team would have received Rs 120 crore and the value of the teams would have increased automatically.
