Bengaluru: Police in Varthur have arrested five people, including three women, for allegedly assaulting a 20-year-old woman at a workers’ shed over claims of an alleged relationship.
The accused have been identified as Bapoon (36), Suknahar Khatun (44), Seema Dhafdar (32), Asura Khatun (32), and Fatay Dhafdar (32), all natives of West Bengal. Three other accused—Jamsheed, Tukon, and Noor—are currently absconding, and a search is underway.
According to police, the victim, also from West Bengal, was working in an apartment complex and living separately in a nearby shed. The accused were known to her and worked in the same area.
The complaint states that the accused had been accusing the woman of having a relationship with another man and had earlier abused her. They also allegedly followed and harassed her when she went to work. Despite being warned by the victim, the harassment continued.
On April 3 at around 9.30 pm, the accused allegedly entered the shed and attacked the woman using sticks and other objects. They also threatened her, saying she would not be allowed to stay in Bengaluru and warned of serious consequences.
A man identified as Riaz, who tried to intervene, was also assaulted, according to the complaint.
Based on the victim’s statement, police registered a case and arrested five accused. Efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining suspects. Police also said they are searching for Riaz for further inquiry.
During initial questioning, the accused reportedly claimed that they had warned the woman earlier regarding the alleged relationship and attacked her out of anger. Investigation is in progress.
