Following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in West Bengal, names of more than 91 lakh voters are estimated to have been removed from the voter list in the state. As per the available data, a total of 90,83,345 names have been removed from the list so far. However, the final figures have not been released yet, as in some cases the process of e-signature is yet to be completed by the judicial authorities. According to officials, the final list will be released as soon as this process is completed.

According to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, a total of 60,06,675 cases were sent for adjudication, out of which 59,84,512 cases have been processed and e-signed. Of these, voters were found removable in 27,16,393 cases, following which their names were removed from the list. Thus, after the complete process of SIR, the total number of removed voters in the state has increased to 90,83,345.

It may be noted that before the issue of SIR notification, the total number of voters in the state in November was 7,66,37,529. In the draft list published in December, 58,20,899 names were removed, which increased to 63,66,952 in the final list released on February 28. Now after the judicial process this number has increased further.

According to the data, the maximum number of name deletion cases have been reported from Murshidabad district, where names of 4,55,137 voters were removed. This is followed by North 24 Parganas, where 3,25,666 names were removed from the list.

An official from the CEO office said voters whose names were found “removable” will be given an opportunity to present their views and appeal.

Meanwhile, assembly elections will be held in West Bengal in two phases. In the first phase, voting will be held on 152 seats on April 23 and in the second phase on April 29, voting will be held on the remaining 142 seats and the election results will be declared on May 4.
