Veteran playwright and theatre personality Bhim Vakani, father of popular television actress Disha Vakani and Mayur Vakani, passed away at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness. Bhim Vakani had a distinguished career spanning theatre, television, and cinema. Through his Ahmedabad-based Vakani Theatres, he delivered numerous memorable plays, leaving a lasting impact on Gujarati theatre. Leaders from the arts community, as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have expressed their condolences on his passing.
Significant Contribution to Children’s Careers
Bhim Vakani played a pivotal role in nurturing his children’s artistic talents. Producers and actors of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, including Asit Modi and Dilip Joshi, paid tribute, noting that Disha and Mayur’s success is rooted in their father’s guidance. His bold decision to send Disha to Mumbai at a young age proved decisive for her career in television.

Bhim Vakani was not limited to Gujarati theatre; he also made significant contributions to Hindi cinema. He appeared in acclaimed films such as Lagaan (starring Aamir Khan), Swades (Shah Rukh Khan), and Lajja. On television, he was featured in episode 1320 of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, playing the character Mavji Cherda, a friend of Champak Chacha, which was well-received by viewers.
Final Farewell and Legacy
Mayur Vakani shared the sad news on social media. His last rites will be performed today at 2:30 PM, starting from his Ahmedabad residence and concluding at Thaltej Crematorium, with family and close associates paying their final respects.
