IMD predicts hail, thunderstorms and strong winds for these Indian states; what travellers need to know

India is poised for several days of inclement weather in many parts of the country as per the forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which predicts that heavy rain along with thunderstorms, hail storms, and gusty winds will affect many states. According to the , an active weather system with influence from western disturbances and cyclonic circulations can be seen.

In northwest India, very heavy rains are likely from April 7 to April 10, affecting states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. These states are likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall or snowfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds of speed ranging from 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, with gusts of 60 kilometers per hour.

Scattered to fairly widespread rains and storms are also expected over the plains, comprising Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan, on April 7 and 8.


In particular, very intense weather conditions are predicted over Rajasthan, where squally thunderstorms along with strong winds at 50 to 60 kmph speed, with gusts up to 70 kmph, may occur on April 7. On the other hand, isolated heavy rains may be witnessed over the Kashmir valley on April 7 and over Himachal Pradesh on April 8.

Rainy weather for Northeast India

According to the latest bulletin released by IMD, northeast India is set to witness continuous rain for the next four days with scattered to fairly widespread rains along with thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Isolated heavy rains may occur over Arunachal Pradesh on April 7, 9, and 12, whereas heavy rain may be experienced over Assam and Meghalaya on April 8 and 12. Likewise, similar weather conditions may occur over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura in about four days' time.

Eastern and Central India under storm influence

Unstable weather is anticipated over Eastern India, where isolated to scattered rain/thunder showers and gusty winds (30-50 kmph) would prevail in the coming four days.

According to the IMD, thundersqualls are predicted over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Bihar in the early hours of April 8, while over Jharkhand and Odisha on April 7 and 8. On April 8, hail storms are predicted over Bihar and Jharkhand.

In Central India, the weather activity will be somewhat subdued, where isolated to scattered rain/thunder showers are anticipated along with gusty winds in the coming three to four days.

South India to experience scattered rains

Over South India, light to moderate rainfall coupled with thunder showers, lightning, and gusty winds will occur across Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and parts of Karnataka from April 7 to 10.

While the intensity of rainfall is anticipated to remain low to moderate, lightning activity is anticipated in some parts of Karnataka. Hot and humid weather will prevail in isolated parts of Tamil Nadu on April 7.
