Breakfast TV star Janai Norman has opened up on her abrupt departure from ABC's Good Morning America Weekend admitting she is heartbroken at the way it played out. The 36-year-old mum of three has been an anchor on the show since 2022, but a few days ago learned her expired contract would not be renewed. She has now taken to social media to say goodbye to fans and open up on her exit. The caption on the close up clip, posted to X, read: "More in time."
"I'd hoped that we'd have more time and it's been hard on me that our time was cut short. I have loved my job. It has been a joy to connect with my co-workers and with viewers to help keep you informed and entertained and to create this community. So it really breaks my heart that I don't get to say goodbye," she said speaking to the camera.
"I'm so sorry that I don't get to say goodbye. It would have been fun," she said referencing the fact she didn't yet get an on screen exit.
"But I have these three young kids, and I have worked weekends their whole lives, and so now they get more of me, and that is worth everything.
"So stay tuned. I'm sorry. I feel you and thank you to every single one of you who has reached out with such kind and validating words, I have needed it, and I appreciate it," she concluded.
Her departure from the show was revealed in the publishing and entertainment newsletter Status rather than through an official announcement and as of yet there has been no word on whether she'll be replaced.
Norman began at ABC as an intern when she was a college student in 2011. She rose through the ranks at local affiliates in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Florida as a reporter and correspondent.
ABC News then brought her on board as a Washington-based reporter, and she eventually helped launch the second hour of Saturday's GMA in October 2019.
In 2022 she was promoted to GMA Weekend and the Saturday and Sunday broadcast is typically seen as a place to fine-tune talent before promoting them to the weekday edition.
Away from the show she also hosts a wildlife show for ABC called Oh Baby!, which is now in its sixth season. The show follows animal parents and examines how they raise their young.
