Morigaon, Apr 6: A tragic incident unfolded in Morigaon district on Monday when a country boat capsized in the Brahmaputra River, leaving three individuals unaccounted for.
The accident took place near Borchapori Ghat in the Moirabari region, where strong winds are believed to have caused the boat to overturn.
Initial reports indicate that 16 passengers were successfully rescued from the water.
Immediately following the incident, search and rescue efforts commenced, with teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police dispatched to the scene.
As the search progressed, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also joined the efforts, but the missing individuals had not been located by the time this report was compiled.
According to NDRF official Mridul Rudra Paul, "We received information about a boat carrying 19 people that had capsized at Borchapori Ghat. Upon arrival, we found that 16 had managed to swim to safety, while three remain missing. We are actively conducting search and rescue operations."
He noted that the vessel involved was a small country boat, referred to locally as a tulunga nao, which is typically used by residents for everyday tasks. The passengers were reportedly attempting to cross the river to gather grass.
“While other boats in the area are equipped with safety gear, this particular one was not,” he remarked. Locals gathered along the riverbank to assist the rescue teams as the search continued throughout the day.
Borchapori Ghat is an essential ferry point for residents along the Brahmaputra, linking several villages within the Laharighat block.
