Cricket Gully | April 7, 2026 1:39 AM CST

The match for Indian Premier League 2026, which was held between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings, could not continue due to heavy rain witnessed in Eden Gardens, Kolkata. According to the forecast, there would be some rains that proved true since the match could only take place for a few moments, namely 3.4 overs.

To avoid further damage, the ground staff activated the emergency plan, namely covered the pitch and square areas from the rain. The crowd present in the stadium became unhappy with the match since it reached the climax. Both sides were forced to leave the playing field as they could not tell when to return to the match.

KKR In Trouble Before Rain Break

Before the arrival of rain during their game against the Punjab Kings, the Kolkata Knight Riders had a hard time. The bowlers of Punjab Kings came out very strong and managed to dismiss the two players in the first few overs.

Xavier Bartlett proved to be the most successful bowler for the Punjab Kings in this game. He dismissed Finn Allen in the early overs and later Cameron Green to create tough competition for the Kolkata team. Both players were unable to contribute significantly to their team.

When rain interrupted the game, Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi were at bat for Kolkata.

Eden Gardens Drainage System Explained

India considers Eden Gardens to have the top drainage system in all of its stadiums. The Chinnaswamy Stadium along with this stadium is ready to handle any rainfall delays that may occur during events.

The ground operates with a contemporary subsurface drainage system that features underground pipes for quick water elimination. The system contains deep coring and full ground coverage along with various water-clearing machines.

The ground staff operates four super soppers to quickly dry the entire outfield area. The ground takes 20 to 30 minutes to be ready after rain stops because of its advanced system.

The match can still continue if the weather conditions become better.

What If the Match Gets Washed Out?

The match will be declared a washout, with one point being awarded to both sides, if the rain persists and causes the match to be washed out.

Punjab Kings were let down by their performance, since they were in the driver’s seat until the rain spoiled things. The bowlers were already making KKR struggle when Punjab was fully in charge of the game. Kolkata Knight Riders would prefer a match to be canceled. They were struggling early in the innings, and sharing points could help them avoid a loss.

The Punjab Kings would earn 5 points but lose their chance to reach the top of the table if the match gets canceled. KKR will begin their first tournament match.

Toss Decision Did Not Work for KKR

At the toss, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane chose to bat first. The pitch condition which he believed to be dry led him to choose that option. But the weather conditions made it hard for batters to play.

Rain combined with cloudy conditions created an advantage for fast bowlers who played on the pitch. KKR also went in with just one spinner, which was a surprising decision.

Punjab Kings succeeded in their plan because they took advantage of the circumstances to score their first victory.

Match Hangs in Balance

The match situation stays uncertain because rain keeps disrupting the ongoing game. The two teams will compete in an exciting match if the weather conditions become better.

PBKS plans to keep their winning momentum while KKRtries to fix their early game problems. For now, everyone is waiting for the rain to stop.
