New Delhi, Apr 6: The Border Security Force (BSF) is currently evaluating the potential of introducing crocodiles and snakes into the 'vulnerable' riverine sections of the India-Bangladesh border to combat illegal crossings and cross-border crimes.
This initiative was brought up during a meeting held at the BSF headquarters in Delhi on February 9. Following this discussion, field units along the extensive 4,096-km border were requested to share their insights, as reported by officials on Monday.
Data from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) indicates that approximately 856 km of this border remains unfenced due to challenging geographical features, including dense forests and riverine landscapes.
The BSF has suggested investigating the practicality of utilizing reptiles such as snakes and crocodiles in these vulnerable areas to achieve operational goals, in accordance with directives from the Union home minister, officials stated.
However, several field commanders have expressed concerns regarding the feasibility of this approach, noting that many border regions are populated. They warned that the presence of these animals during floods could pose risks to local residents.
"This concept was discussed in a February meeting led by BSF DG Praveen Kumar, aimed at assessing the plan's viability. The force is currently reviewing feedback from field commanders," a senior BSF officer mentioned.
Additionally, there are various other proposals under consideration that involve the deployment of advanced technology and surveillance equipment to enhance the security of this border, according to another officer.
The India-Bangladesh border is frequently targeted for infiltration and is associated with numerous cross-border crimes, including human trafficking, drug smuggling, and the circulation of counterfeit Indian currency and weapons.
