The Kerala government has officially launched the 'Women's Security Scheme' aimed at unemployed women and transgender individuals from economically weaker sections. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated this initiative in Malayinkeezhu, Thiruvananthapuram. As part of the first installment, ₹1,000 has been directly credited to the bank accounts of over 10.18 lakh approved beneficiaries through direct benefit transfer. The primary goal of this initiative is to empower women financially and promote gender justice.
Eligibility Criteria for the Scheme
Women aged between 35 and 60 years from economically disadvantaged families who are not receiving benefits from any other social welfare pension scheme are eligible for this program. Additionally, transgender individuals have also been included, marking a significant step towards inclusive welfare governance.
Monthly Pension and Future Inclusion
Beneficiaries will receive a monthly pension of ₹1,000 deposited into their bank accounts. The state government has indicated that after verifying applications, other eligible candidates will also be included in this scheme.
Background of the Initiative
The announcement of the 'Women's Security Scheme' was made last October as part of a broader welfare package aimed at laborers and low-income families.
Empowering Women through Financial Independence
The Chief Minister emphasized that financial dependence restricts women's participation and autonomy in public life. This scheme represents a significant step towards providing women with self-reliance and dignity.
Kerala's Commitment to Gender Budgeting
Kerala has been the first state in India to institutionalize gender budgeting at the departmental level. Through this scheme, Kerala is reinforcing its commitment to inclusive and sensitive governance.
