Cristian Romero's father has confirmed the Tottenham Hotspur captain has a 'very high release clause' in his current contract with the north London club. The Argentinian defender has been linked with a move away from the Lilywhites this summer amid the club's ongoing struggles in the Premier League.

Roberto De Zerbi will oversee his first game in charge of Spurs when they take on Sunderland next weekend, knowing they need to pick up points quickly if they want to move away from the relegation zone. As things stand, Spurs are 17th in the top flight, just a point above West Ham United in the final relegation zone spot.

Romero - who is the club captain - has made 31 appearances in all competitions, with six goals and four assists in that time.

However, he has missed several top flight games through injury and has been linked with a move away from the club, if they are relegated this summer.

"He has two more years on his contract with Tottenham and a very high release clause," Victor Romero revealed in a recent interview. "The English club isn't going to let him go for free; it's between $50-70m [£37.8m-£53m].

"For me, they'll want to recover what they invested."

La Liga side Atletico Madrid are among the clubs said to be keen on a move for the Argentinian international, with Diego Simeone reportedly a big fan of the 27-year-old.

Romero has also been linked with a sensationa, return to his boyhood club Club Atletico Belgrano and his father 'hopes' the speculation is true as a fan of the Argeninian club.

Victor was asked about a potential return to Argentina and said: "It's a bombshell that keeps getting bigger. I hope it's true.

"As a Belgrano fan and father, what more could I want? But I don't know anything.

"Cuti isn't one to make statements, that's why it surprises me. I don't know anything, but in football, anything can happen.

"Today, you might be thinking about being close to your family, and tomorrow, they put together a team to win the championship, and everything changes. I don't want to lie."
