The ongoing situation about Cameron Green's ability to bowl again after his injury leads to mounting difficulties for Kolkata Knight Riders in their IPL 2026 season. Green would have made a significant impact for his team because they had three to four available pace-bowling options for their upcoming match after losing their first two games in the IPL 2026 tournament.
The Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who KKR signed for a massive INR 25.2 crore at the auction, was declared unfit to bowl by Cricket Australia. The decision created a small controversy which involved KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane. Tim Southee the team's bowling coach has provided new information about Green's bowling fitness progress.
Cameron Green who mainly plays as a batting all-rounder for Australia has bowled in T20 leagues and international matches. He has delivered 439 balls in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians but he has not bowled frequently during these matches while achieving 16 wickets at an economy rate of 9.07.
Green possesses a 6ft 4 inch height which enables him to bowl effectively although his bowling has limited effects on batters. He will miss KKR's matches because of a minor lower back injury he sustained during the T20 World Cup 2026 earlier this year.
Cricket Australia has recommended that he should take time off to recover while his bowling capacity will be rebuilt through a rest period. The team has exercised caution with his handling because he has not participated in any bowling activities throughout the tournament.
"Yeah, Green's been bowling well, tracking his rehab and getting himself back to being able to bowl in games. He'll continue to do that." Southee commented.
The team management announced that Green has started bowling in the nets after they made their latest update to the public. Southee reported on Sunday that Green's rehabilitation process is advancing successfully as he progresses toward match-ready bowling skills.
His update hinted at a possible return with the ball against Punjab Kings, although it still looks unlikely that Green will bowl in that match. Southee confirmed that KKR maintains ongoing communication with Cricket Australia to watch Green's recovery progress.
Kolkata's bowling performance has suffered during Cameron Green's absence because their young-fast-bowlers face difficulties when their main bowlers are not available.
The unit, led by Blessing Muzarabani and Vaibhav Arora, has faced several challenges, including a heavy 65-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 2. The team currently faces serious problems with their Powerplay bowling according to Southee who mentioned this issue during his assessment of the team's performance in IPL 2026.
"It's always hard when you're not taking wickets, particularly in the powerplay. Taking wickets early stems the run flow and makes things easier. We haven't quite managed to do that so far, but we’ll plan accordingly and hopefully take those early wickets," Southee added.
The Kolkata team needs to recover from their recent defeats because they will compete against Punjab Kings on April 6 at Eden Gardens, which will begin the match at 7:30 PM IST.
