Simple Ways to Clean Fruits and Veggies: Nowadays, pesticides are being used extensively in agriculture. These pesticides protect crops from diseases and pests. However, these pesticides are composed of various hazardous chemicals and tend to adhere to the crops. Residues of these chemicals often remain on the surface of fruits and vegetables; if ingested, they can enter our bodies and cause gradual harm over time. Prolonged exposure to these chemicals can lead to serious health issues such as hormonal imbalances, allergies, and cancer. Therefore, it is essential to clean vegetables properly.
5 Ways to Clean Fruits and Vegetables
Wash Thoroughly Under Running Water: After bringing fruits and vegetables home from the market, they should be washed thoroughly under running water. Many people merely rinse them briefly, but this is not sufficient. Fruits and vegetables should be washed for at least 2–3 minutes while rubbing them with your hands to remove pesticides, dust, and bacteria adhering to their surfaces. For leafy greens—such as spinach or coriander—it is more effective to wash each leaf individually. This method helps eliminate chemical residues.
Soak in Saltwater: Saltwater is considered highly effective in removing pesticides. Fill a large bowl with water, add 1–2 teaspoons of salt, and let the fruits and vegetables soak in it for 10–15 minutes. The saltwater solution helps loosen the chemicals present on the surface of the produce, making them easier to wash off. This method is particularly effective for vegetables such as eggplants, okra, and cauliflower. After soaking, do not forget to rinse them again with clean water.
Use Baking Soda: Using baking soda is considered a scientifically proven and effective method. Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda into one liter of water and let the fruits and vegetables soak in this solution for 10–15 minutes. Research has shown that baking soda helps break down the chemical structure of pesticides, thereby reducing their potency. This method is particularly effective for fruits and vegetables such as apples, tomatoes, and bell peppers. It is essential to rinse them thoroughly with clean water afterward.
Clean with Vinegar: Vinegar acts as a natural cleaning agent that helps eliminate bacteria and, to some extent, pesticides. Fill a bowl with water, add 1–2 tablespoons of vinegar, and soak the fruits and vegetables in the mixture for 10 minutes. This method is especially beneficial for vegetables with smooth surfaces, such as tomatoes or cucumbers. Avoid using excessive vinegar, as it may alter the taste and aroma of the produce. It is necessary to rinse them with clean water after use.
Peel and Cook Properly: Removing the peels from certain fruits and vegetables eliminates a significant portion of the pesticides, as most of these chemicals reside on the outer layer. Peeling items such as potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and gourds before use can be a safer option. Additionally, thoroughly cooking vegetables can help reduce the levels of certain harmful substances. Keep in mind, however, that overcooking can deplete nutrients; therefore, it is best to cook them over medium heat for the appropriate duration.
