Mumbai: Reliance Industries (RIL) shares sharply dropped on Monday. The RIL stock declined 3.50 per cent to Rs 1,303 apiece at the time of writing this article. The stock has fallen by more than 17 percent in the past three months. The shares of Reliance have plunged more than 7 per cent in the last one month.

Reliance’s market cap fell below Rs 18 lakh crore and reached around Rs 17.63 lakh crore, causing concern for investors. Notably, Reliance Industries was the biggest laggard on the Nifty 50 index. With its huge weight on the index, the Nifty 50 also came under pressure dung the day. However, later it made a comeback as Sensex also recovered from the morning losses. RIL has a weight of approximately 8.87 percent in the Nifty, the second highest after HDFC Bank.

Why did RIL shares fall

The shares of Reliance Industries went down mainly due to global tensions, mainly the West Asia conflict which has impacted crude oil supplies. Another reason is the government’s decision to reimpose export duties on diesel and ATF. The government has imposed a duty of approximately Rs 21.50 per litre on diesel and Rs 29.50 per litre on ATF, while petrol has been exempted.

Reports suggest that the export tax is not applicable on Reliance’s SEZ refinery, as the conglomerate has received relief through court decisions. Approximately 75 percent of the company’s diesel production and 35 percent of its jet fuel come from SEZs, making the impact of the tax likely to be limited.
