New Delhi. With tensions escalating significantly in the Middle East, the war has entered its 33rd day. US President Donald Trump has intensified his threats, while Tehran has responded sharply. The conflict is taking a dangerous turn.
Axios reported on Sunday that the US, Iran and a group of regional mediators are discussing the terms of a potential 45-day ceasefire that could permanently halt the fighting.
Axios cited four American, Israeli, and regional sources familiar with the talks. Axios correspondent Barak Ravid reports that negotiations are underway on the terms of a two-phase deal. The first phase would involve a potential 45-day ceasefire during which negotiations would be held to end the war permanently.
The report states that the second phase will involve an agreement to end the war. If more time is needed for negotiations, the ceasefire could be extended. US President Donald Trump told the Wall Street Journal on Sunday that his deadline for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz or face attacks on vital infrastructure is Tuesday evening.
What’s going on behind the scenes?
According to reports, talks are taking place through Pakistani, Egyptian, and Turkish mediators, as well as through text messages between Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. A US official said the Trump administration has made several proposals to Iran in recent days, but Iranian officials have not yet accepted them.
Sources said mediators are discussing the terms of a two-phase deal with the parties. The first phase would likely be a 45-day ceasefire, during which negotiations would be held to end the hostilities permanently. One source added that the ceasefire could be extended if more time is needed for negotiations.
Sources said mediators believe that a full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a solution to Iran’s highly enriched uranium, either by removing it from the country or diluting it, can only be the result of a final deal.
Iran takes a tough stance on the Strait of Hormuz!
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards issued a stern warning to the US and Israel regarding the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, April 5. The IRGC stated on social media that a new security system is being established in the Persian Gulf and that this vital sea route will no longer be the same.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has warned of a retaliatory strike on Easter Sunday. He said that if the route is not opened, Iran’s power plants and bridges will be targeted on Tuesday. Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz has led to a sharp rise in global crude oil prices, impacting the global economy.
