New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad equalled Virat Kohli’s embarrassing captaincy record after his side slumped to a 43-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Sunday. CSK suffered their third straight defeat in IPL 2026 and continue to remain winless in the tournament so far.
The defeat also marked CSK’s seventh straight loss under captain Gaikwad, highlighting the team’s disastrous run under his leadership. Gaikwad joined Kohli and former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh in an unwanted list after registering his seventh successive loss as captain for CSK.
Kohli lost seven matches in a row as RCB captain across the 2018 and 2019 seasons in the IPL, while Yuvraj lost seven games in a row as captain for the now-defunct Pune Warriors India in IPL 2013. Gaikwad has lost seven in a row since CSK’s 50-run defeat against RCB on March 28 last season.
Overall, Sourav Ganguly and Rohit Sharma hold the unwanted record for the most losses in a row as an Indian captain in the IPL. Ganguly lost eight matches in a row as the captain of the Pune Warriors India in 2011, while Rohit lost eight consecutive matches as captain for the Mumbai Indians in 2022.
Most consecutive losses by an Indian captain in IPL:8 – Sourav Ganguly (Pune Warriors India, 2012)
8 – Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians, 2022)
7 – Yuvraj Singh – (Pune Warriors India, 2011)
7 – Virat Kohli – (Royal Challengers Bengaluru, 2018-19)
7 – Ruturaj Gaikwad – (Chennai Super Kings, 2025-26)
Kevin Pietersen, who lost nine matches in a row as captain for Delhi Capitals in 2014 and George Bailey, who lost nine in a row as the captain of the Punjab Kings in 2015, hold the record for the most consecutive defeats as captain in the history of the IPL. Gaikwad is only two losses away from equalling the unwanted record for consecutive defeats as a captain in the IPL.
