New Delhi: The BJP has responded to Congress’ accusation that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife holds three passports, including several foreign passports. The allegation was hurled ahead of Assembly election in Assam on April 9 with the results to be declared on May 4.
BJP refutes claims of Congress
BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi, while addressing a press conference in Delhi, refuted the claims made by the Congress. He said, “The documents released contain multiple glaring errors. The surname is wrongly written as ‘Sharma’ instead of ‘Sarma’ for Himanta Biswa Sarma. The photo appears sourced from public domain images.”
He added, “Nationality is shown as Egyptian while the passport is from Antigua and Barbuda. All of this clearly indicates that these are fabricated and misleading documents, seemingly created in frustration and desperation ahead of elections in the state.”
What was the allegation?
Earlier, Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged during a press conference in Delhi that the Assam CM’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma has three passports. He claimed that the Congress party has proof to prove the allegations. He said, “We have documents showing that Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds three passports.”
Sarma points out discrepancies
Earlier in a post on X, Sarma ‘categorically reject every allegation’, and in another post, he provided further clarification. He wrote, “Busting Congress’ propaganda — serious discrepancies exposed. The documents being circulated show multiple glaring inconsistencies, suggesting a crude and poorly executed attempt at digital manipulation.”

In the post, Sarma pointed out several ‘inconsistencies’ like surname mismatch, photograph, UAE ID anomalies, expiry date of Antigua and Barbuda passport, and discrepancies in Egyptian passport, among other. He added, “I am confident that Pawan Khera’s campaign of falsehood is nearing its end. Eventually Mr Khera will go to Jail.” Notably, the battle to take the reins of Assam is in its last leg with the BJP looking to continue to be in power in the state.
