A brush fire erupted in the vicinity of California State University San Marcos, specifically in the 500 block of La Moree Road. Firefighters successfully halted the advance of the flames on Sunday, which had been threatening residential areas and public spaces.
The fire, fueled by dry vegetation, spread at a moderate rate, scorching approximately three acres and posing a risk of expansion. It approached the 200 block of Walnut Hills Drive, near a playground, raising concerns for nearby structures.
Starting in an area dense with brush, the flames quickly gained momentum. Smoke and fire were reported alarmingly close to homes. Authorities indicated that the fire endangered properties near Walnut Hills Drive.
As a precautionary measure, the main campus of California State University San Marcos was evacuated. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office alerted the public via social media, advising residents in San Marcos to be vigilant due to heightened firefighting and law enforcement presence. The message included a warning: “If you feel you are in danger, GO!”
Fire crews from the San Marcos Fire Department were deployed to contain the blaze, prioritizing the protection of homes and mitigating the fire's spread through the dry fuel.
By 4:10 PM, officials announced that firefighters had successfully stopped the fire's forward movement, significantly reducing the immediate threat to nearby structures. Evacuated residents were directed to a temporary shelter at Mission Hills High School, where they were advised to remain until it was safe to return home.
