The victim, Syed Saleh Awad, was found dead in a river in Cilacap Regency on Feb. 20, and police later linked the body to a missing-person report filed in Jakarta, Channel News Asia reported.

Syed Saleh had reportedly been staying at his child’s home in Jakarta, about 300 kilometers from where his body was discovered.
“We questioned five witnesses. Based on that and the evidence we gathered, we arrested two suspects identified by the initials H and K,” Cilacap police chief Budi Adhy Buono said at a press conference on March 27.
Police said the killing took place on the evening of Feb. 16 at a rented house in Sukabumi, West Java. Investigators allege that H hit the victim twice in the neck with a bamboo stick while K covered his mouth to stop him from screaming.
The two men then wrapped the body in bedsheets and plastic, encased it in cement and dumped it in the river.
“After killing Syed Saleh, both H and K drove around with the body for about 30 minutes, before returning to the house to decide their next steps. They later disposed of the body at the Menganti Dam in Cilacap using a vehicle they prepared,” Budi said.
H and K, who worked as construction and harvest laborers, were arrested at around 9 p.m. on Mar. 25.
Police say jealousy was the motive for the killing.
“The victim was close to a woman named Lina, who already had a boyfriend,” Budi said.
Lina’s boyfriend, identified by the initial A, is believed to be the person behind the murder and remains at large.
A, from Sukabumi, had known H and K for a long time as they had previously worked together.
Syed Saleh had reportedly traveled to Sukabumi several times for alternative medical treatment, during which he became acquainted with Lina.
On Feb. 16, Syed Saleh traveled from Jakarta to Sukabumi to meet Lina. He was then invited to the rented house, where he was killed.
“Lina was not aware that the victim would be killed,” Budi said.
H and K have been charged under Article 459 of Indonesia’s Criminal Code for premeditated murder, which carries penalties of death, life imprisonment, or up to 20 years in prison.
