Princess Charlene attracted attention during Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Monaco by wearing white, a privilege granted to only a small number of Catholic royal women around the world.
Princess Charlene, 48, exercised the privilège du blanc, the right to wear white instead of black in the presence of the Pope when meeting Pope Leo XIV with her husband Prince Albert II and their twin children, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, at the royal palace on Mar. 28, the Monaco Tribune reported.
She wore a white dress with floral lace details and a matching veil, paired with pearl stud earrings and her diamond engagement ring, according to The Court Jeweller magazine.

Over the years, the privilege to wear white has been granted to a limited number of Catholic women, including the Queen of Spain, the Queen of Belgium, and the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg.
Those without the privilege, such as former US First Lady Melania Trump during her 2017 Vatican visit and US Second Lady Usha Vance, are required to wear a black outfit with a veil when meeting the pope as a sign of humility.
Princess Charlene became the first member of Monaco’s royal family to exercise the privilege when she met Pope Benedict XVI with her husband in 2013. She has since worn white at several official Vatican- events, including the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV in 2025.
Princess Gabriella was also seen in white, although she has not formally been granted the privilege, with the choice reportedly allowed as an exception due to her age.
Prince Jacques also dressed to match his father Prince Albert in a blue suit.
The royal family took photos with the pope at the palace before attending an outdoor Mass at the Stade Louis II. During the ceremony, Princess Charlene was seen receiving communion and making the sign of the cross.
The visit drew attention as Pope Leo XIV chose Monaco as his first European stop of the year.
According to CNNhe called on its residents to share their wealth with those in need.
