New Delhi. The sultanate and the Islamic Republic of Iran have begun discussions on ensuring the smooth flow of maritime traffic through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing regional conflict, Oman’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday. Issuing a statement on the Ministry The statement said the discussions focused on possible options to ensure the smooth flow of movement through the Strait of Hormuz. It is an important global energy corridor, through which a large portion of the world’s energy shipments pass.

During the meeting, experts from both sides presented several proposals and approaches aimed at maintaining stability and unhindered maritime movement in the region. The statement said that these proposals will be further studied. Earlier, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said in an interview with Sputnik that the Islamic Republic is in the final stages of preparing a draft protocol aimed at establishing a new navigation system in the Strait of Hormuz. Plans to initiate discussions with Oman to create a joint framework. During the interview, Gharibabadi said that the draft of this protocol is still in the final stages of preparation. Once it is ready, we will start talks with Oman so that we can draft a joint protocol. He indicated that the proposed protocol aims to regulate navigation in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, for which Tehran is seeking cooperation from Oman to develop a mutually agreed mechanism. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council is due to vote next week on a draft resolution proposed by Bahrain. The resolution seeks to give member states the right to use all necessary defensive means to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and all this amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia. This proposal has come in an environment of increasing tension regarding maritime security amid conflict in West Asia.
