Synopsis

A Gen Z employee in Mumbai has cleverly navigated his company's strict no work from home policy. When asked why he ignored an important client message after hours, he explained it would count as working from home. This response left his manager speechless. The incident highlights Gen Z's approach to workplace boundaries. They follow rules precisely.

Some companies grant work from home, others are strict about the rule and do not permit employees to log in from the comfort of their homes. They are expected to reach the office sharp at 9 without fail, every day, and complete their professional duties, disregarding issues like a long commute. But this norm does not always apply to staying back or attending important meetings after work hours. While millennials have already accepted this unfair fate, Gen Z employees are protesting these unspoken rules in their own quirky yet witty way.

Recently, Mumbai-based chartered accountant Paaras Gangwal dropped a post on X, recounting one such story of a Gen Z employee, Rohit, who gave his company’s manager a taste of his own medicine when the manager strictly banned him from doing work from home.

Gen Z employee follows no WFH

According to the post, Rohit had just joined the company when his manager made expectations clear on the very first day, stating that work from home would not be permitted under any circumstances. Rohit acknowledged the directive without resistance, choosing not to question or challenge the rule.

In the days that followed, Rohit adhered strictly to the company’s no work from home policy. He reported to the office on time every morning, carried out his responsibilities diligently, and logged off at the designated hour without exception. The situation, however, took a major turn one evening when, at around 8 pm, he received a message from an important client.

Manager speechless after Gen Z employee’s response

Despite noticing the text, Rohit chose not to respond. The next day, when the angry manager asked Rohit why he had ignored the text, he offered a composed and straightforward explanation. The employee stated that responding to work messages after office hours would count as working from home, something that had been explicitly prohibited by the manager and that was the reason he didn’t entertain the client.

Rohit’s response left the manager momentarily speechless. The incident has since been widely interpreted as a subtle yet sharp reflection of Gen Z’s approach to workplace boundaries, where rules are not openly defied, but followed with precise, and often revealing, accuracy.
