The Indian government stated on April 5, 2026 that despite disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, there remains strong stability in LPG supplies.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, more than 51 lakh domestic LPG cylinders were delivered on April 4, and there were no reports of shortage of cylinders at any LPG distributorship across the country. Online bookings have increased rapidly and have reached 95%, reducing the need to visit distributors for bookings.
To prevent tampering and black marketing of cylinders at the distributor level, Delivery Authentication Code (DAC)-based deliveries have increased significantly to 89% (from 53% in February 2026). Consumers are strongly advised to use digital platforms (MyLPG app or website) for booking and avoid unnecessary visits to agencies.
Sales of 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders — which are available at the distributorship simply by showing a valid ID proof and do not require any proof of address — recently crossed 71,000–90,000 units in a single day. Their total sales since March 23 have reached approximately 5.7–6.6 lakh cylinders. These smaller cylinders serve as a convenient option, especially for migrant workers and those whose needs are short-term.
The government is also accelerating the expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG), so that the pressure on LPG can be reduced. Over 3.1–3.42 lakh new PNG connections have been activated since March 2026, and an additional 2.7–3.9 lakh new registrations have also been processed.
All refineries are working at their full capacity and have adequate reserves of crude oil. Domestic LPG production has been increased, while the supply of petrol and diesel also remains adequate. The government has given priority to domestic LPG and PNG for homes, and also ensured their availability for essential services like hospitals and educational institutions.
Measures to control demand include increasing the minimum time between bookings (to 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural areas), so that people do not store cylinders unnecessarily. Wherever possible, alternative fuels such as kerosene, coal, induction cooktops and other electricity-powered options are being promoted. States have been directed to ensure no disruption in supplies, conduct raids against black marketeers (over 3,700 raids were reported recently), and refute rumours. The Petroleum Secretary held a review meeting with state officials, stressing on strict vigil against hoarding, misuse and misinformation. Officials clarified that there is no disruption affecting migrant workers or general supplies.
Citizens have been urged not to make panic purchases, save energy and rely only on official sources for information. The government said that every possible effort is being made to maintain continuous availability of essential fuels.
