PTC News Desk: Iran has warned of a “serious risk of radioactive contamination” after fresh strikes near the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, condemning the US-Israeli attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities. He said repeated strikes near the Bushehr plant pose serious risks to people and the environment, not just in Iran but across the region.
Araghchi described the situation as “intolerable” and warned that any radioactive leak could affect neighbouring countries, especially in the Gulf region. He even claimed the plant had been hit four times and said any fallout could threaten nearby Gulf capitals more than Tehran.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that a projectile struck near the plant recently. One staff member was killed by fragments, and a building was damaged, but importantly, no increase in radiation levels has been detected so far.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed serious concern, stressing that nuclear facilities should never be targeted, as even nearby structures may contain critical safety systems. He urged all sides to show restraint and follow nuclear safety rules during conflict.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that the main parts of the plant were not damaged and that electricity production is continuing normally. The Bushehr plant, located on Iran’s Gulf coast, is the country’s only working nuclear power facility and is considered highly sensitive.
