Punjab News: Punjab Parliamentary Affairs, NRI Affairs and Jail Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh today chaired a meeting of all Jail Superintendents at the District Administrative Complex, Hoshiarpur.
All jail superintendents and jail headquarters officials including Arun Pal Singh, IPS, ADGP Jail, Surinder Pal Singh Mand, IPS, DIG Jail (Ferozepur and Patiala Range), Sukhmandar Singh Mann, IPS, DIG Jail (Amritsar Range) and Manmohan Kumar, DIG Headquarters were present in this meeting.
Informed about major initiatives
The meeting was organized for initial familiarization with the jail officials, during which the Jail Minister was apprised about the overall functioning of the department and key initiatives. These include measures to address challenges such as prison overcrowding and management of high-risk prisoners.
Punjab Good Conduct Prisoners Bill
The Jail Minister was also briefed about the proposed “Punjab Prisons and Correctional Services Bill” and “Punjab Good Conduct Prisoners Bill” which are currently under consideration of the Punjab Government. Additionally, proposals to restructuring of the department were also discussed, including the need for additional posts to strengthen the functioning in all the prisons in the state.
The Cabinet Minister also listened carefully to the issues raised by the Jail Superintendents, which included concerns like shortage of staff, functioning of sewerage treatment plants, repair of toilets in jails and maintenance of residential colonies.
Establishment of women’s open jail in Patiala
On the occasion, the Jail Minister was also briefed about the ongoing and future infrastructure projects, which include construction of High Security Jail in Ludhiana and proposals for setting up of Women’s Open Jail in Patiala. The Jail Minister stressed on speedy completion of both the projects so that they can be made operational as soon as possible.
Emphasis laid on improving the rehabilitation process
In his address, Dr. Ravjot Singh inspired the officers to work with honesty, hard work and without any pressure. He stressed on making more stringent efforts to prevent illegal activities in prisons and improving the reform and rehabilitation process of prisoners.
