The number of vehicles on Indian roads is increasing day by day. Often we see number plates of different colors on these vehicles. But what is the significance of these colors? Keeping this in mind why we use white, yellow, green, red and black number plates today. Especially where blue and black number plates are used.

White number plate

White colored number plates are affixed to vehicles intended for private or personal use. For example, cars or motorcycles for domestic or private use have white number plates.

red color

Red colored number plates are considered to be of a very special category. They are installed only on the vehicles of the President of India and Governors of states. Instead of the vehicle’s registration number, these number plates bear the ‘Ashoka symbol’.

Yellow colored number plates

Yellow colored number plates are reserved for vehicles, which are used for public transport or commercial purposes, e.g. Autorickshaw, bus, taxi or cab. Additionally, cargo vehicles such as trucks and mini-trucks also have yellow number plates.

In order to operate any of these vehicles used for commercial purposes, drivers are required to possess a ‘Commercial Driving Licence’.

Green number plate

The use of green number plates is relatively new in our country. This plate is only used for electric vehicles (EV), such as e-rickshaws or electric cars. Interestingly, green color is equally used for both private and commercial electric vehicles.

Blue number plate

Blue colored number plates are only for vehicles used by Foreign Diplomats. Ambassadors or high-ranking officials of other countries travel in these vehicles, so this plate is used to give them a special identity.

Black colored number plate

The number is written in yellow letters on the black colored number plate. Such plates are used for rental vehicles, such as rental cars or bikes. Interestingly, these vehicles do not require a separate commercial driving license to operate, thus distinguishing them from normal taxis.
