News India Live, Digital Desk: On the occasion of World Health Day (World Health Day 2026), an issue has come to light, which is to our everyday life and is also very dangerous. Today plastic has become an important part of our lives. From kitchen containers to office lunch boxes and water bottles, plastic is prevalent everywhere. But do you know that this plastic breaks down and turns into ‘nano plastic’ and can slowly reach our brain directly through our bloodstream? Dr. Vineet Banga, a renowned neurologist from Fortis Hospital, Faridabad, has revealed the harmful effects of nano plastic on the body and mind.

What is nano plastic and how does it reach the body? Nano plastics are microscopic particles that are formed when larger plastics break or wear down. These particles are so small that it is impossible to see them with the naked eye. When we eat food in plastic utensils or drink water in plastic bottles, these microscopic particles enter our body through breath, water and food.

Can they break the ‘blood-brain barrier’ of the brain? According to Dr. Vineet Banga, nature has given a protective shield to protect our brain from harmful elements, which is called ‘Blood-Brain Barrier’. This barrier prevents harmful toxins present in the blood from reaching the brain. But some recent research and studies have shown that nano plastic particles are so small in size that they can easily cross this strong protective shield and enter the brain directly. However, scientists around the world are currently doing further research on how much of it goes into the brain and what effect it has in the long run.

What is its fatal effect on the brain? Dr. Banga, Director of Neurology Department, explains that when these nano plastic particles start accumulating in the nerves and cells of the brain, it can cause many serious neurological problems. Its biggest side effect is inflammation in the brain. Due to this, the brain cells start weakening, which has a direct impact on the person’s memory, concentration and thinking ability. In the long run, it can also increase the risk of diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia.

How to avoid the danger of nano plastic? Adopt these 4 measures

Choose plastic option: Minimize the use of plastic in your everyday life. Start using glass, steel or copper utensils for office lunch boxes and home storage containers.

Do not keep hot food in plastic: Do not keep hot food in plastic containers or heat food in plastic utensils in the microwave. When exposed to heat, harmful chemicals and nano particles from plastic quickly dissolve in food.

Change water bottle: Most of us drink water from plastic bottles. Change it immediately. Use steel, glass or copper bottles instead.

Take healthy diet for brain: To keep brain cells healthy, include green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits and dry fruits in your diet. Especially consumption of walnuts and almonds is very beneficial for the brain.
