Seven judicial officers assigned to hear SIR-related cases were confined for hours inside the Block Development Officer’s office in Kaliachak-II in Malda on Wednesday, after angry villagers surrounded the premises demanding that their names be added to the electoral rolls.
The protest began in the afternoon, with demonstrators making it clear that the officials would not be allowed to leave until their demand was addressed. According to one of the officers, the situation escalated around 3:30 pm. Despite informing senior authorities, including the district administration, the police superintendent and the Election Commission of India, no immediate assistance arrived.
SIR Officials Released Late Night
Relief came only late at night, when senior police personnel were finally deployed to disperse the crowd and secure the officials’ exit. The matter has since been reported to both the Election Commission and the Calcutta High Court, with the poll body seeking a detailed report from the state’s Director General of Police.
The officer also expressed concern over the safety of the team, noting that three women officials were among those trapped, which added to the anxiety during the prolonged standoff.
Responding to the incident, a senior Election Commission official said efforts were underway in coordination with local authorities, and the district police had been directed to ensure the safe evacuation of the officers.
Violence Erupts At Congress Office In Kolkata
The nomination of Rohan Mitra, son of late Congress leader Somen Mitra, from Ballygunge has triggered intense protests at the Indian National Congress office in Kolkata. The situation turned volatile at Vidhan Bhavan, where party workers questioned the decision and staged demonstrations.
Tensions escalated into clashes between rival groups of Congress workers, leading to physical altercations and a near-violent situation. One protester suffered a head injury, while a woman reportedly fainted during the chaos. The party office effectively turned into a battleground.
The unrest follows the Congress party’s announcement of its first list of candidates on Sunday, after which workers and supporters expressed anger at multiple locations on Monday.
