Recent developments in India’s LPG supply chain have raised concerns among households, but officials have clarified that there is no shortage of cooking gas in the country. The slight delay in cylinder delivery is being attributed to temporary pressure on the distribution system rather than any supply crisis.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the country has sufficient LPG stock to meet demand. However, delivery timelines have been impacted due to a sudden surge in bookings.

Earlier, consumers typically received LPG cylinders within 2 to 3 days, but now deliveries may take 4 to 5 days in many areas. This means an additional waiting period of around 1 to 2 days for customers.

Officials have pointed out that the delay is largely due to panic booking. Amid global uncertainties—especially tensions in oil-producing regions—many households have started booking cylinders earlier than usual as a precaution.

This behavior has led to a sharp spike in demand, with booking volumes reportedly increasing by up to 60% in recent weeks. As a result, the supply chain is experiencing temporary pressure, slowing down deliveries.

Authorities have reassured citizens that India has adequate reserves of LPG, along with sufficient availability of petrol and diesel. The current situation is not due to a shortage but rather a temporary logistical slowdown.

Consumers are advised to remain calm and avoid unnecessary bookings, as this will help normalize the system faster.

To improve transparency and prevent fraud, LPG deliveries are now being monitored through an OTP-based verification system. Customers receive a one-time password that must be shared with the authorized delivery agent at the time of delivery.

Officials have urged users to only share OTPs with verified personnel to avoid scams.

To maintain fair distribution, specific booking intervals are already in place:

• Urban areas: Minimum gap of 25 days between bookings
• Rural areas: Minimum gap of 45 days

These rules ensure that supply remains balanced and accessible to all consumers.

Experts believe that the situation is temporary and will stabilize soon once booking patterns return to normal. As supply chains adjust to the sudden surge in demand, delivery timelines are expected to improve in the coming days.

The government has urged people to act responsibly and avoid panic-driven decisions. By booking cylinders only when required, consumers can help ease the burden on the distribution network.
