What is Panakam?

Panakam is a famous beverage of South India. This sherbet is cool and refreshing. It is believed that Lord Ram likes to consume it. Panakam is specially prepared and offered to him on his birthday. You can also make this drink easily at home.

Ingredients for making Panakam

  • Water
  • half inch ginger
  • 5 to 6 cardamoms
  • 4 to 5 black peppers
  • a pinch of saffron
  • 60 grams jaggery
  • basil
  • juice of one lemon
  • Ice
  • clay pot

Step-by-step method of making Panakam

  • To make Panakam, first of all you have to grind black pepper, cardamom and ginger well in a mortar.
  • After this, add some water to this spice and prepare it like a paste.
  • Now fill water in an earthen pot and add saffron petals and keep it for some time.
  • After this, cut the jaggery into small pieces and put it in the pot.
  • Now mash the water and jaggery in the pot with the help of a churner.
  • When the jaggery becomes a little coarse, leave the water to rest for a few minutes.
  • After this, add ground masala, basil leaves and lemon juice in the mortar and mix well.
  • Now filter it and take it out in a glass and add ice cubes. Panakam is ready.
  • First offer it to Lord Rama. After this you can also accept it.
