LPG Crisis Charge : The Central Government has clarified that hotels and restaurants can no longer charge their customers separately for LPG or any other operational expenses in the food bill. Only the price of food and government tax can be added to the bill.
If other extra fees are added there will be a violation
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has said that restaurants will have to include all their expenses in the menu price upfront. If someone adds a separate ‘gas charge’, ‘fuel charge’ or any other extra fee, it will be considered a violation of the rules.
CCPA said- this is a violation of consumer rights
A cafe in Bengaluru recently had a 5% ‘gas crisis charge’ added to the bill for lemonade. The customer ordered two glasses, which cost ₹358. The cafe gave a discount of ₹17.90, then added a ₹17.01 ‘gas crisis charge’. After this the total bill became ₹374. CCPA said this is a violation of consumer rights.
Many hotels are charging under new name
The CCPA has warned that many hotels are charging under new names to bypass ‘service charges’. If any illegal charge is seen in the bill, the customer can first ask the hotel management to remove it.
Apart from this, there are four ways to lodge a complaint-
Call National Consumer Helpline 1915.
Complain through NCH mobile app.
Register complaint online on e-Jagriti portal.
Send complaint to District Collector or directly to CCPA.
This rule will increase consumer safety and ensure transparency in food prices.
