A European hotspot hailed as the 'best-kept secret' has been uncovered, and it's merely a three hour flight from the UK.
Research examining over 90 coastal locations across Europe assessed factors including the consistency of summer weather, visitor numbers, beach standards, value for money, and tourist density compared to the local population. This enabled Solmar Villas to compile a top ten list of the finest and most-hidden holiday spots for Brits seeking something away from the typical tourist trail.
Joint winners claiming the top position were two destinations: Almeria in Spain and Calabria in Italy, though for those watching their spending the Spanish option may prove more appealing. During May, flights to Almeria can be secured for as little as £20 one way, positioning it as a superb choice for those pursuing an affordable getaway.
Sharon Bradbury, General Manager at Solmar Villas commented: "It's no surprise to me that Almería performed so well in this ranking. It's known for its dramatic desert landscape, and is the only desert in mainland Europe. In the same instance, it's coastal, has beautiful protected natural parks, and over 300 days of sunshine per year, making it one of the sunniest places in Europe."
She continued: "What's particularly interesting is that many lesser-known destinations actually outperformed some of the Mediterranean's most famous tourist hotspots. For example, Ibiza ranked 92nd overall, Mykonos came in at 95th, and Dubrovnik placed 97th in the rankings.
"While these destinations are famous for a reason and have plenty to offer, travellers looking to avoid high prices and heavy crowds may want to consider some of the higher-ranking locations on this list as a cheaper alternative away from the tourist hustle and bustle", reports the Express.
Located on Spain's sun-drenched southeastern coastline, Almeria is a historic harbour town brimming with Moorish architecture, museums, and expansive sandy beaches.
Among its most iconic landmarks is the Alcazaba, a former fortress perched on a hill with views across the sea on one side and the city on the other. Ascend to the summit for spectacular vistas, while discovering Almeria's fascinating Moorish heritage.
Explore the impressive Catedral de Almeria with its elaborate interiors, and the historic Mercado Central de Almeria, as celebrated for its stunning 19th-century architecture as its selection of fresh, local produce.
A brief stroll from the city centre lies the expansive sandy Playa de San Miguel, and on bright days you'll spot people unwinding on the golden sands or enjoying a swim in the crystal-clear blue waters. Stroll or cycle along the lengthy flat promenade and you'll discover numerous cafes, bars, and local eateries with outdoor seating that overlooks the sea.
At one end, you'll encounter Almeria's port, where you'll observe boats frequently departing for Morocco. If you don't fancy such an adventurous voyage, there are also sunset cruises and other brief excursions exploring the coastline.
Almeria is also situated near one of Europe's only genuine deserts and has frequently served as a filming location. It has doubled for the old west in Spaghetti Westerns, while also being the backdrop for filming Lawrence of Arabia and Conan the Barbarian. Book a tour of the Tabernas Desert and you'll feel as though you're embarking on your own epic adventure through the breathtaking landscape.
Since Almeria is less of a tourist magnet than other Spanish cities, costs tend to be more affordable. Pints can be purchased for approximately €3.50, roughly £3, and numerous restaurants provide a menu del dia at lunchtime which can cost as little as €15 for a three course meal with a drink.
