Previously, the app’s translation feature was limited to a small handful of languages. With this update, the total number of supported languages (excluding automatic detection) has jumped from 6 to 19, offering much more flexibility for users in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, as per WABetainfo.
Privacy First: Local Translations
One of the most important aspects of this new feature is how it handles your private data. To keep your conversations secure, WhatsApp uses On-Device Translation.
Instead of sending your private chats to a "cloud" server or a third party (like Google or Microsoft) to be translated, WhatsApp downloads a "language pack" directly to your phone. The translation happens locally on your device, which means your messages remain protected by end-to-end encryption and never leave your phone during the process.
What’s new in WhatsApp for Android
The latest update (found in Android beta version 2.26.12.4) adds support for a wide variety of regions. The 13 new languages include:
Europe: Czech, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Ukrainian, and Latvian.
Asia & Middle East: Indonesian, Turkish, Urdu, and Simplified Chinese.
These join the original set of supported languages, which included English, Arabic, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, and Russian. There is also a dedicated pack that helps the app automatically detect which language is being sent to you.
How the feature works
For beta testers who have access to the feature, translating a message is as simple as selecting it from the chat.
Download: Users choose and download the specific language pack they need.
Translate: Incoming messages can then be translated into the user's preferred language in real-time.
Future Voice Support: While these packs are currently for text messages, experts believe they will soon be used for voice message transcriptions, allowing users to read what was said in a voice note even if they don't speak the sender's language.
When will Android users get it
Currently, this expanded language support is only available to a limited number of Android beta testers who have installed the latest update from the Google Play Store.
If you don't see the new languages yet, don't worry—WhatsApp typically tests these features with a small group before rolling them out to all beta users over the following weeks. A full release for all WhatsApp users is expected later this year once the testing phase is complete.
