Maharashtra: These days, gas shortage is deeply affecting the hotel and restaurant business of Mumbai. Many eateries in the city have been forced to close their doors. Hotel and restaurant organization AHAR said on Tuesday that due to interruption in the supply of commercial LPG, about 20 percent of hotels and restaurants in Mumbai are currently closed. The organization has also warned that if the gas supply does not normalize soon, the situation may become more serious in the next few days.
According to AHAR, if the LPG shortage continues like this, then within the next two days about 50 percent of the hotels and restaurants in the city may reach the point of closure. The organization says that the hotels that are open now are running on the basis of the gas stock they have. Every hotel or restaurant has different reserves of gas, so the decision to operate them will also depend on that. Those establishments which are running out of LPG stock are gradually being forced to stop services.
Association did not give instructions for mass bandh
AHAR has made it clear that no decision has been taken by the organization to collectively close hotels and restaurants. Keeping any establishment open or temporarily closing it entirely depends on the decision of the hotel owner. If a restaurant has enough gas available then it can continue its services. At the places where gas is running out, the owners are left with no option but to stop the work.
Kitchen operations affected due to LPG shortage
Most of the restaurants and hotels in Mumbai depend on commercial LPG cylinders for their everyday cooking purposes. In such a situation, even the slightest interruption in gas supply directly affects their functioning. At present, many hotels and restaurants are facing problems in running their kitchens. People associated with the industry say that due to uncertainty about the availability of gas, many restaurants have started making changes in their menus. Some places are serving limited dishes, while some establishments have reduced their operating hours.
News of impact in other cities also
For the last few days, news is coming out that apart from Mumbai, shortage of commercial LPG is being felt in many other cities of the country too. Restaurant organizations say that if this problem is not resolved soon, thousands of restaurants may be affected. The LPG shortage has come to light at a time when the global energy market is already under pressure due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Due to this tension, fuel supply and shipment has been affected, which has increased concerns about the supply chain.
Efforts continue to normalize supplies
Government officials say that efforts are being made to stabilize the supply of LPG soon. However, industry organizations say that hotels and restaurants are already facing difficulties due to slow delivery of commercial cylinders.
At present, Mumbai’s hospitality sector is keeping an eye on how soon the gas supply returns to normal. If the situation does not improve soon, many more hotels and restaurants may be temporarily closed in the coming days, which may have a major impact on the city’s catering industry.
