PIB Fact Check: Every day different types of photos, videos and messages go viral on social media. Many of these posts contain shocking claims. Some messages also contain suspicious links, which can lead to fraud if clicked. Similarly, a message is currently going viral on social media claiming that if you don’t update your Aadhaar, your SBI YONO app will be blocked. It is urging users to update their Aadhaar by downloading the APK file. If you get such message then you need to be careful.

PIB Fact Check, the government’s official fact-checking body, has clarified that the viral message is fake. PIB has urged people not to download APK files. PIB advises emailing suspicious messages to report.phishing@sbi.co.in.

An APK file is actually an Android app file, but fraudsters hide malware inside. Once a person downloads and installs it, they can access their phone remotely. This allows them to read messages, capture OTPs and even attempt to withdraw money from bank accounts.
