Bank Strike Today: There may be disruption in banking operations in public sector banks across the country on Tuesday, as bank unions are going on a nationwide strike demanding immediate implementation of the five-day working week.

Who called this strike?

Actually, this strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). It is an umbrella organization of nine unions representing bank officers and employees. Union leaders say, “This step has been taken after the meetings with the Chief Labor Commissioner on January 22 and 23 failed as no assurance was given on their demand. Banks are already closed on January 23, January 24, January 25 and January 26.

AIBEA gave information

All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) general secretary C.H. Venkatachalam said that “despite detailed discussions during the conciliation proceedings, no assurance was given on our demands. Therefore, we have been forced to go on strike.”

Which services will be affected?

Public sector banks include State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda. Branch level services like cash deposits, withdrawals, check clearance and administrative work may be affected in these banks. However, big private sector organizations like ICICI Bank and Axis Bank may see a greater impact. There may be delays in digital banking services including mobile and internet banking.

Why are the unions striking?

The unions demand that all Saturdays be declared a holiday, a proposal which they say was agreed upon during the 12th bilateral agreement with the Indian Banks Association (IBA) in March 2024, but the government has not yet notified it. “It is the government that is not responding to our demands. There will be no loss of man-hours as we have agreed to work 40 minutes more every day from Monday to Friday,” said Rupam Roy, general consultant, All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC).
