WhatsApp has begun testing a new feature called ‘Ask meta ai’designed to help users fact-check information directly in their chats. Available to iOS users via the TestFlight beta programme, the tool is expected to roll out more widely after testing. It builds on WhatsApp’s existing Meta AI integration, which already answers queries across various topics.
How the Feature Works
Previously, users had to manually forward a message to Meta AI and frame a prompt to verify it. The new tool streamlines this process by allowing users to query Meta AI directly from within a chatmaking fact-checking quicker and more intuitive. According to WABetaInfo, this could support proactive fact-checking in fast-moving group conversations.
Privacy First Approach
Meta has emphasised that privacy safeguards are built in. Selecting “Ask Meta AI” does not automatically transmit data. Users must manually choose to add context and send a message for verification. This ensures that sensitive or personal chats are not shared without explicit user action, addressing concerns about data misuse.
Why It Matters
Misinformation has long been a challenge on messaging platforms, especially in large communities where false claims spread rapidly. By embedding fact-checking directly into chats, WhatsApp aims to empower users with tools to verify content in real time. This approach could reduce reliance on external searches or third-party apps, making fact-checking more accessible.
What’s Next?
The tool is currently in beta testing for both iOS and Android, with a broader rollout expected after refinements. If successful, this could represent a significant step in WhatsApp’s strategy to fight misinformation and position Meta AI as a reliable assistant within daily conversations.
