Nowadays WhatsApp is not just a means of communication, but has become an important part of our memories and needs. Be it personal matters or important office messages, everything remains in this app. In such a situation, if an important chat is accidentally deleted, then it is natural to be tense, but do not panic! By following some easy steps, you can get those deleted messages back. Let's know how:
Method 1: Bring back old messages from backup (works on both Android and iPhone)
If you have turned on the backup setting of WhatsApp, then your data keeps getting saved on Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone). By using this method, you can very easily get the chats back.
First of all, remove WhatsApp from your phone.
Now reinstall it from Google Play Store or App Store.
Log in by entering the number.
When the app asks you to restore the backup, tap on 'Restore'.
All the old messages will be back in a few moments.
Keep in mind that this method will only bring back those messages that were present till your last backup.
Method 2: Recovery from local backup present in the phone (only for Android users)
If you have not done a cloud backup, then do not worry. In Android phones, WhatsApp automatically creates a local backup, which remains in your phone's storage.
Open the File Manager app and go to the /WhatsApp/Databases/ folder.
Here you will see a file like: msgstore-2025-05-20.1.db.crypt14
Rename it to `msgstore.db.crypt14`.
Now uninstall WhatsApp and reinstall it.
During installation, select the option 'Restore'.
This method will work only if you have not tampered with the file and there is no cloud backup.
Method 3: Recover chats using third-party software (when there is no backup)
If you have neither taken a backup nor are you able to recover anything from local files, then the last hope is third-party recovery tools. Some popular tools like Dr.Fone, iMyFone, etc. can help in this task.
Install the recovery software on the computer.
Connect your mobile to the computer via USB.
Android users may have to turn on USB debugging on their phone first.
The tool will scan your device and try to find the deleted messages.
If the software is successful, you may get your lost chats back.
These tools are not guaranteed, and some of them are not free.
